GLASS WORKS / NCMA SPRING 24
Case Study: Long Island, New York has a wealth churches, chapels, cathedrals, and temples. Within these houses of worship you will find a wealth of stained glass that dates as far back as the 1600s all the way to our current 21st century. What this project proposes to do is create an app, that will help glass works enthusiasts to find the dynamic, exciting artworks that exist here on Long Island. With a proposed sponsorship of the Nassau County Museum of Art, this app will help the viewer with background, history, techniques, as well as a map finder to help locate the buildings. In conjunction with the app, the museum will be hosting an exhibit and workshop that will educate the visitor on how these glassworks are made.
THE EXHIBITION
Poster Initiative: Multiple posters will be strategically placed throughout Nassau County in high traffic areas. This would include coffee shops, delicatessens, train stations and other public places.
Installation: The main floor of the Nassaus County Museum of Art will contain a select group of actual windows, dismantled and placed within the galleries. Each work will be grouped with other like-minded works and lit from behind for optimal viewing.
THE PROGRAM
Getting Interactive: Just sign up and download the app. Put in your location and interest, the technology does the rest. The finder will locate for you artworks by style, era, architecture, and denomination. The projects database of information as well as third party educational web sites will help immerse the viewer into a greater experience.
Prototype A visualization of the mobile program that shows the functionality of the Destination finder and the Style finder. Input your focus and the app will generate a list of destinations or styles with a googlemap to help guide you. Examples of different stained glass imagery are shown, each with a tppable function to bring you to a full image and description of the work.
Interaction Model: Organizing and mapping out the interaction of the app will help the programmers complete the project as invisioned.
THE SPECIFICS
Type and Color: Simple typography will be used to compliment the varied compositions of stained glass. Color will be determined by the work itself. The full RGB spectrum can be used offset by a simple gray tonality scale that leans closer to the darks.
INSPIRATION
Janson's History of Art has always been the go-to reference and inspiration for all things western art and style. First introduced in college, the book never fails to impress.
Hollywood movies have never been at a loss for dazzling the viewer with the pageantry of medieval times. Many scenes - accompanied by the right music - played out in chapels with stained glass reflected upon the actors pouring their hearts out in true melodramatic fashion.
St. Chappele located in Paris, France is the high-water mark of stained glass. Arranged across 15 windows, each 15 metres high, the panes depict 1,113 scenes from the Bible recounting the history of the world until the arrival of the relics it contains.
Quick sketches on location with watercolor and pencil helps give insight into the composition. What you see is not always what you see. The act of drawing helps iad the eye process what the original artisan was making.
On location in Manhattan. Gotta take a selfie!
